Missing a connecting flight because of a delay

Flight passengers are entitled to compensation if they arrive with a delay of 3 hours or more at your final destination.
A compensation payment of up to 600 Euro can be claimed.
After two hours of waiting time at the airport, the airline has to supply its customers with snacks and free refreshing drinks.

Receiving compensation for a missed connecting flight

Flight passengers who miss a connecting flight due to an airline's mistake and are delayed for more than 3 hours will be able to claim up to 600 Euro compensation. The amount of compensation is based on the flight distance. The listing below shows you how the amount of compensation is usually calculated:

short-haul flight ( < 1500 km )

medium-haul flight ( < 3500 km )

amount of compensation: 400,00 Euro

long-haul flight ( > 3500 km )

Missed connecting flight: What conditions have to be met to claim compensation?

• The airline has to be responsible for the missed connecting flight.

• The check-in was on time.

• The flight was due to depart within the EU or land within the EU. (If landed in the EU, the airline must also have its headquarters in an EU country.)

• The missed connecting flight does not date back more than 3 years.

Missed connecting flight with different airlines

In the event that a flight delay leads to a missed connecting flight, and the arrival at the final destination is at least three hours late, air passengers do have a claim for compensation! For this to apply your flight plan has to be one booking. It does not matter whether the flights were operated all by the same or by different airlines. Flight passengers who booked their air trip with one single booking are entitled to an alternative transportation or a compensation in case they miss a connecting flight due to a precious flight delay.

Missed connection flight because of extraordinary circumstances

Airlines are not necessarily responsible for missed connection flights. In the case of so-called extraordinary circumstances, airlines are relieved from their obligation to compensate their passengers. As so-called extraordinary circumstances apply:

bad weather conditions
strikes
bird strike at aircraft engines
airport or airspace closures

Note: If the airline could have prevented the problem, for instance if the airline cited bad weather conditions but failed to ensure that there were adequate supplies of deicer before the start of wintertime it may be deemed responsible for the cancellation. If flights operated by other airlines were able to depart on time, the matter is clear. But nonetheless this is not a thing that flight passengers can easily prove.
